Francis Marion drops 12-11 contest during sweep at #8 CSU

COLUMBUS, GA – A throwing error with two outs and the bases-loaded in the bottom of the ninth allowed eighth-ranked Columbus State University to escape with a 12-11 win over Francis Marion University and a sweep of Saturday's (April 14) Peach Belt Conference baseball doubleheader.  CSU won the first game 10-3.

Francis Marion (15-27, 7-20) will play its final home games of the season next weekend with a three-game PBC series against Georgia Southwestern State University, beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m.

The losses drop FMU percentage points behind Lander University in the race for the eighth and final berth in the Peach Belt Tournament.

Sophomore second baseman Patrick Jackson and senior first baseman Trey Chapman each had three hits in the second game.  Jackson scored three times and Chapman drove in two runs.  Junior center fielder Gage Taylor was 2-for-4 with three runs scored and one driven in, while junior catcher Alex Griffith and junior third baseman Steven Cox each hit solo home runs.

Junior right-hander Cole Hinnant (2-4) took the hard-luck loss.  He had pitched a 1-2-3 eighth inning before incurring trouble in the ninth with the Patriots up 11-9.

Catcher Frank Wager hit the third of his three solo home runs to lead off the ninth.  CSU then loaded the bases with two outs before the FMU miscue.  The game nearly ended on a diving attempt by sophomore left fielder Austin Fox on a two-out bloop down the left field line.

CSU reliever Tyler Cadenhead (6-0) was the beneficiary of the comeback as he threw three scoreless frames after FMU had taken an 11-7 lead in the top of the sixth.

Francis Marion took a 6-1 advantage into the bottom of the fourth, but Columbus State (32-7, 15-5) scored six times to grab a 7-6 lead.

The Patriots then scored five times on only one hit in the top of the sixth to go up 11-7.  Senior William Robbins brought in one run when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, two runs scored on errors, and Chapman delivered a two-run double.

Solo homers by Wager and second baseman Grant Berry trimmed the lead to 11-9 in the seventh.

In the first contest, Robbins and Chapman led FMU with two hits, while junior righty Evan Flynn (1-4) started and took the loss.  He pitched five innings and allowed five runs (four earned) on eight hits with four strikeouts.

CSU starter Perez Knowles improved to 5-1 with a six-inning outing.  He surrendered three runs on six hits, while fanning 11.

FMU claimed a 1-0 lead in the second on Tee DuBose's RBI-single to left center.  The Cougars scored five unanswered runs to own a 5-1 advantage after five innings.

In the top of the sixth, junior shortstop CJ Mackinson led off with a single and Robbins followed with a two-run homer to trim the deficit to 5-3.  However, Columbus State scored five times on four hits in the seventh, including a grand slam homer by designated hitter Chase Brown, to take a commanding 10-3 advantage.

At the plate on Saturday, Hinnant extended his hitting streak to six games and has now reached base safely in 17 straight contests.
