UNG edges Patriots with 3-run eighth inning

FLORENCE, SC – The University of North Georgia scored three times in the eighth inning to break up a pitchers' duel as the Nighthawks defeated Francis Marion University 5-1, Saturday afternoon (March 31) in Peach Belt Conference baseball action.

Francis Marion (12-22, 5-15) and North Georgia (17-12, 10-7) will play the series finale on Sunday at 1 p.m.  It will be Youth Day at Sparrow Stadium as all area youth wearing their uniform will be admitted free, or with presentation of a flyer that was distributed earlier.

As they did in Friday night's loss, FMU outhit the Nighthawks, this time 6-5. Sophomore second baseman Patrick Jackson recorded his second 3-hit game of the season to lead the Patriots.  Junior left fielder Gage Taylor doubled to left centerfield to lead off the fifth frame to extend his hitting streak to 18 games.

Francis Marion junior right-hander Evan Flynn (1-3), making just his second start of 2018, was tagged with the loss. He nearly recorded the squad's first complete game of the season, tossing 8.1 innings and allowing five runs (four earned) on only five hits with seven strikeouts.

Nighthawk left-handed reliever Logan Burt (2-1) earned the win with 4.1 scoreless innings, while righty Parker Morrison picked up his sixth save of 2018 with 2.2 scoreless frames.

UNG scored once in the top of the first, but the Patriots knotted the score in the bottom of the second on an RBI double to left centerfield by junior third baseman Steven Cox.

However, over the next seven innings, FMU would leave five runners in scoring position.  The Patriots loaded the bases with one out in the third, but could not push across a run.

A run-scoring single to right center by Chase Sudduth staked the Nighthawks to a 2-1 lead.  North Georgia then plated three runs in the eighth – highlighted by an RBI triple down the right field line by Jake Arnold that saw him continue on home when the relay throw went awry – to go on top 5-1.

Sophomore catcher Andres Perez had two hits for the Nighthawks.
