Wolves hold off Patriots for 7-4 win

FLORENCE, SC – Shortstop Colin Allman and designated hitter Ben Herring both registered two hits and two runs batted in as Newberry College held off a late Francis Marion University rally to claim a 7-4 non-conference baseball win on a chilly Tuesday evening (March 27) at Cormell Field at Sparrow Stadium.

FMU (12-20) will return to Peach Belt Conference play this weekend with a three-game series against the University of North Georgia.  The home series will consist of single games on Friday at 7 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m., and Sunday at 1 p.m.

FMU junior center fielder Gage Taylor led the Patriots with a 2-for-5 evening that extended his hitting streak to 16 games.  Sophomore second baseman Patrick Jackson had a fifth-inning double, while junior right fielder Cole Hinnant drove in a pair of runs for Francis Marion with a seventh-inning single.

Junior right-hander Isaac Rodgers (2-5), the second of nine Patriot hurlers, was tagged with the loss as he allowed three runs on three hits.

The Wolves (17-14) employed seven pitchers with senior southpaw Hunter Hill (1-2) being credited with the win as he tossed two scoreless innings.  Junior righty Charlie Fessler earned his second save of 2018 with a scoreless bottom of the ninth.

Newberry took a 3-0 lead in the top of the third as Allman had a two-run single up the middle and Herring an RBI single to center.

FMU answered back with a single tally in the bottom of the frame. Senior shortstop Justin Palmer reached on a throwing error and advanced to second on a wild pitch.  He went to third on a single to left field by Taylor and continued on home when the ball was mishandled in the outfield.

Newberry took a commanding 7-1 advantage with four runs in the top of the fourth.  Six Francis Marion pitchers did combine for five scoreless frames after that point.

The Patriots rallied in the last of the seventh with three runs. Hinnant's two-run base hit preceded an RBI groundout by senior first baseman Trey Chapman.

However, FMU stranded two runners on base in the frame, two in the eighth, and one in the ninth as altogether Francis Marion left 12 runners on base.
