Freshmen arms Roseberry and Hathcock silence Wolves in 5-2 win

NEWBERRY, SC – Freshmen right-handers Austin Roseberry and John-Riley Hathcock combined on a five-hitter while a pair of Patriots extended long hitting streaks as Francis Marion University defeated Newberry College 5-2, Tuesday evening (March 20) in non-conference baseball action. 

FMU ups its record to 12-16, with its fourth win in the last five outings, while the Wolves fall to 13-14. The Patriots will travel this weekend to Lander University for a three-game series starting at 6 p.m. on Friday.

Junior outfielder Gage Taylor led off the game with a single to extend his hitting streak to 12 games, while junior shortstop CJ Mackinson had three knocks and one run batted in, while pushing his streak to 11 games. Junior third baseman Alex Griffith, junior second baseman Steven Cox, senior catcher William Robbins, and junior right fielder Cole Hinnant all registered two hits.

The game was knotted up at 2-2 after three innings as senior designated hitter Ben Herring scored on an error and senior left fielder Derek Olenchuk had an RBI-groundout for the Wolves. Senior first baseman Trey Chapman crossed the plate on a double play grounder and Griffith had an RBI single to center field for the Patriots.

Roseberry (2-1) pitched five innings, allowing only one earned run on five hits, while Hathcock earned his first save with four hitless and shutout innings.

Francis Marion would later take a three-run advantage, thanks single runs in the fourth, sixth, and seventh innings.  The Patriots took a 3-2 lead on an RBI-single to left field by Mackinson in the fourth inning. In the sixth, Robbins reached on an error that scored Cox. An inning later, senior designated hitter Tee DuBose plated Griffith with a sacrifice fly to top off the scoring at 5-2.

The loss went to Newberry right-hander Tomas Sorcia, Jr. (1-2) as he gave up three runs on nine hits in five innings pitched.
