Saints use nine-run fifth inning to spark win over FMU

FLORENCE, SC – After scoring three runs to start the contest, Limestone College used a nine-run fifth frame to put the game out of reach in a 17-5 victory over Francis Marion University, Sunday afternoon (March 4) in non-conference collegiate baseball action.

After the three game series, FMU falls to 8-12, while Limestone improves to 10-8.

The next game for the Patriots will be Tuesday at Barton College with the first pitch set for 2 p.m.

FMU junior shortstop CJ Mackinson had two hits and two RBIs, while senior designated hitter Tee DuBose added two knocks during the contest and junior second baseman Josh Kent drilled a three-run home run.

The Saints got a single run in the first inning as a bases loaded walk to junior left fielder Ryan Creps put Limestone up 1-0. They would add two more runs in the top of the third as junior first baseman Zach Piazza hit a lead-off homer to straight away center field and Creps laced an RBI-single up the middle.

The big inning for Limestone came in the fifth frame as they added a nine-spot to the scoreboard with RBI-singles by senior center fielder Brandon Etheridge, junior shortstop Channing Painton, and sophomore second baseman Trace Whetsell. Piazza doubled off the center field wall (RBI) and junior third baseman Chase Allen singled, driving in two runs. Creps hit a sacrifice fly and the inning was capped off by a two-run homer by sophomore catcher Brandon Banks.

The Patriots got on the board in their half of the fifth inning with a 392-foot homer by Mackinson, making the score 12-1.

Walks to Banks and freshman pinch hitter Seth Morgan, both with the bases loaded, added two more runs for Limestone in the top of the sixth.

Francis Marion scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI-single to center field by Mackinson and Kent's three-run home run to right center.

The Saints would add three runs in the ninth to cap off the scoring.

Senior southpaw Robert Bamford stays perfect for Limestones at 3-0 as he pitched six innings, giving up one run on seven hits and striking out six.

Patriot sophomore lefty Garrett Wilson (0-1) went four innings, allowing three runs on five hits and punching out five batters.
