FMU falls to #16 Wingate 8-5

WINGATE, NC – Despite two RBIs each from Francis Marion University junior center fielder Henry Davis IV and junior second baseman Brody Thomasson, the Patriots couldn't hold off the offensive attack of 16th-ranked Wingate University in an 8-5 loss, Tuesday evening (Feb. 27) in non-conference collegiate baseball action.

Francis Marion (7-10) will host Limestone College for a three-game series, Mar. 2-4 on Cormell Field at Sparrow Stadium. The series begins with a single game on Friday at 6 p.m.

Four Patriots had one hit each in the contest, including Davis, senior first baseman Trey Chapman, junior left fielder Gage Taylor, and junior third baseman Steven Cox.

Wingate (14-2) put a four-spot first inning on the board with a sacrifice fly by junior right fielder Tanner Forry and a three-run homer by senior designated hitter Bradley Brown.

FMU would get their first runs of the game in the fifth frame as Davis doubled down the left field line driving in two, and Thomasson had an RBI-groundout. The Bulldogs recorded two more runs in the bottom half as junior third baseman Tyler Schneider scored on a wild pitch, followed by a sacrifice fly by junior first baseman Zach Little, making the score 6-3 in favor of Wingate.

After the Bulldogs added a pair of runs in the sixth, Francis Marion came back with two of their own in the seventh frame as Thomasson had a sacrifice fly scoring Taylor, and a batter later, junior catcher Alex Griffith reached on a fielding error plating sophomore pinch hitter Nicky Winterstein and pulling FMU to within three runs at 8-5.

Although the Patriots got the tying run to the plate in the ninth inning, they could not get the key hit needed.

Freshman righty Austin Roseberry (1-1) picked up the loss for the Patriots as he was knocked out in the first inning. Junior right-handed reliever Evan Flynn came into the game for Roseberry and pitched 3.1 strong innings, giving up just two hits and fanning four batters. Altogether seven Patriot hurlers took to the mound.

Junior righty starter Nick Stegman (2-1) pitched 6.1 innings for Wingate and recorded the win, while giving up all five of FMU's runs and striking out five batters. Junior right-handed pitcher Lane Wildman earned his second save of the season.
