FLORENCE, SC – Francis Marion University sophomore right-handed pitcher Christian Umphlett threw five and two-third shutout innings leading the Patriots to a 7-4 victory over Augusta University, Friday afternoon (Feb. 9) in Peach Belt Conference baseball action.

FMU ups its record to 3-2 on the campaign and starts the conference schedule 1-0, while the Jaguars fall to 0-4 and 0-1.

Francis Marion will play a twinbill on Saturday against Augusta with the first pitch set for 12 p.m. to finish off the Pepsi Pop-Off Series.

Junior shortstop CJ Mackinson led FMU with four hits and a pair of runs scored, while junior catcher Alex Griffith went 3-for-5 with a run scored and two driven in. Griffith has hit safely in all five games this season.

FMU would score twice more an inning later as Griffith and senior designated hitter William Robbins hit back-to-back doubles. After later advancing to third, Robbins would score on a fielder choice grounder by senior center fielder Brooks Kennedy, making the game 3-0.

The Jaguars came right back in the fourth frame, as sophomore third baseman Timothy Gray singled to right field scoring junior right fielder Harrison Moore. Senior first baseman Ty Hobbs followed with a three-run homer to left field giving Augusta a 4-3 lead.

FMU recorded with three runs in the bottom of the sixth as junior left fielder Gage Taylor singled to right center plating senior first baseman Trey Chapman. Later that inning, Griffith singled through the right side, scoring two runs and putting the Patriots back on top 6-4. A bases-loaded walk by Taylor in the seventh frame gave the Patriots an insurance run and a 7-4 lead.

Umphlett shut down the Jaguars after relieving starter Sam High in the fourth inning. In his five and two-thirds innings pitched, Umphlett struck out three batters, while giving up only two hits and earning his first win of the season.
