A middle-innings rally by LR proves decisive in a 7-5 Patriot loss

FLORENCE, SC – Lenoir-Rhyne University used a pair of three-run innings to surge their way past Francis Marion University, Saturday evening (Feb. 3) in non-conference college baseball action.

The Patriots end their season-opening tournament with a record of 2-1, while the Bears move to 3-0.

Francis Marion will play host to the University of Mount Olive at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon (Feb. 6) before kicking off Peach Belt Conference play against Augusta University, Feb. 9 at 6 p.m. in the Pepsi Pop-Off Series.

Senior designated hitter Tee DuBose had a run-scoring single and senior catcher William Robbins blasted a solo home run to lead the Patriots. Junior third baseman Alex Griffith was the lone FMU player to record two hits.

Patriot junior starting pitcher Arien Seymour pitched four solid innings, allowing only one run. Sophomore righty Christian Umphlett (0-1) relieved Seymour in the fifth and suffered the loss for the Patriots.

Lenoir-Rhyne senior leftfielder Markus Shoemaker and junior DH Aaron Stamper accounted for two RBIs apiece, while right fielder Justin Dean and first baseman Alex Reynolds each rapped out three hits.

After trading runs in the second inning, the Patriots would rally with three runs in the fourth frame. Junior second baseman Josh Kent scored on a passed ball, while Dubose and junior infielder Brody Thomasson crossed the plate after a two-out Bears' error.

Lenoir-Rhyne rallied in the fifth and sixth innings, scoring three times in each frame. The fifth inning was highlighted by a Stamper two-RBI double to center field. With the bases loaded and one run already in, Shoemaker singled through the right side of the infield, scoring two runs in the top of the sixth.

The winning pitcher for the Bears was sophomore righty Nolan Flachofsky (1-0), the beneficiary of the middle-innings rally, while senior right-hander Landon Whitson recorded his second save of the weekend with a scoreless ninth.
