DuCharme charms #22 Pacers in game 1 of split

AIKEN, SC – Senior right-hander Chance DuCharme and sophomore reliever Cole Hinnant combined on a four-hitter and senior designated hitter Logan Koch delivered a tie-breaking two-run single in the eighth inning to give Francis Marion University a 3-1 win over 22nd-ranked USC Aiken, Saturday afternoon (April 15) in the first game of a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader.  The Pacers earned a split of the twinbill by holding off FMU for a 7-5 game-two victory.

The split moves Francis Marion (28-16, 9-12) into a three-way tie for eighth place in the conference standings.  The Patriots play at Claflin University on Wednesday at 6 p.m., before hosting Columbus State University for the final PBC series of the year.  The three-game series will open with a single game on Friday at 6 p.m.

DuCharme (4-3) allowed a first-inning run to the Pacers and then little else.  He surrendered three singles, walked two, and struck out seven in seven innings of work.  Hinnant gave up one single and fanned three in his two frames to earn his sixth save of 2017.

Trailing 1-0 entering the eighth, senior pinch hitter Zack Haralambis led off by drawing a walk from USCA starter Connor Riley (3-2).  Freshman infielder Jameson Spitzmiller bunted Haralambis over to second and junior first baseman Trey Chapman knotted the game at 1-1 with an RBI single down the right field line.  After the second out of the inning, junior left fielder Brooks Kennedy singled to right and junior center fielder Reese Cooley walked to load the bases.  Koch then followed with his two-run single to right field.

Kennedy was the lone FMU player with multiple hits in the opener as he finished 2-for-4.

Riley and one Pacer reliever combined to strikeout 16 Patriot batters.

In game two, freshman outfielder Connor Howell, junior designated hitter William Robbins, Koch, and Chapman, all recorded two hits.  Both of Robbins' hits were doubles and he drove in four runs.

A pair of Christians started on the mound in the Easter weekend contest.  Freshman righty Christian Umphlett (5-3) drew the nod for Francis Marion, while Christian Aragon started for the Pacers.  Umphlett took the loss as he allowed five runs on five hits in 2.2 innings.  FMU sophomore lefty Arien Seymour had perhaps his best outing of the year as he tossed 3.1 scoreless and hitless frames.

Aragon did not figure in the decision as reliever Nick Yobbi (3-2) was credited with the win for his 4.1-inning effort.

Trailing 1-0 due to a Jonathan Banks' solo home run, Francis Marion scored three times in the top of the third, all the runs crossing on a bases-loaded double by Robbins.

USCA (30-11, 14-7) quickly responded by scoring five times in the bottom of the frame, including a two-run double by Banks, to go on top 6-3.  FMU scored single tallies in the fourth and fifth innings to draw within 6-5.  The fourth-inning run scored when Howell's double to left field was misplayed allowing Chapman to score and the fifth-inning run came when Cooley and Robbins both doubled.  Cooley extended his streak of safely reaching base to 26 straight games.

The Pacers added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth.  Francis Marion left two runners on base in the seventh inning.
