DuCharme sparkles in 7-1 win over Pirates

FLORENCE, SC – Senior right-handed pitcher Chance DuCharme pitched seven shutout innings and junior designated hitter Reese Cooley belted a two-run homer to help propel Francis Marion University to a 7-1 win over Armstrong State University, Saturday evening (April 1) in Peach Belt Conference baseball action.

Francis Marion ups its overall mark to 23-11 and moves into sole possession of eighth place in the PBC standings with a 6-7 mark.  The Pirates drop to 14-16 and 0-10.

Both squads will conclude their three-game series with a doubleheader on Sunday at 1 p.m.  General admission to the Griffin Athletic Complex is $8 for adults and $5 for students.

DuCharme (3-2), who made his national-leading 10 start of the season, scattered six singles in his seven frames, while fanning five and walking only two.  FMU freshman southpaw Garrett Wilson pitched the final two innings.

Senior catcher Logan Koch continued his hot hitting with an RBI-single to center in the bottom of the first inning.  Koch, who finished the day 2-for-4, has hit in six straight games and 17 of his last 18 contests.

Two batters later, junior utility player Brooks Kennedy drew a bases-loaded walk to stake FMU to a 2-0 advantage.

Cooley doubled the margin to 4-0 with a drive over the left field fence in the second inning.  It was his eighth home run of the year and team-leading 34th and 35th runs batted in. He has now reached base safely in 16 straight contests.

The Patriots plated three insurance runs in the last of the sixth.  Senior shortstop Zach Callahan and Kennedy opened the inning with infield singles and moved up one base on a sacrifice bunt.  Junior first baseman Trey Chapman plated Callahan with a single, a sinking liner that eluded the Pirate left fielder.  After a strikeout, sophomore outfielder Cole Hinnant ripped a two-run triple to the right center field gap to account for the final Patriot tallies.

In addition to Koch, junior left fielder William Robbins also registered two hits for FMU.

Center fielder Mike Warren and first baseman Zack Goble had two hits apiece for Armstrong State.

Pirate lefty starter Sam Goberdhan (3-3) surrendered all seven runs (only four were earned) in his 5.1-inning stint.
