Patriots break out for split of twinbill with GSW

AMERICUS, GA – Handcuffed by Georgia Southwestern State University pitchers for the first two games of the weekend series, Francis Marion University broke loose for 12 runs on 12 hits en route to a 12-8 win on Saturday afternoon (March 11) and a split of the day's Peach Belt Conference doubleheader.  Zach Barron's two-out RBI single in the bottom of the ninth provided GSW with a 2-1 win in Saturday's opener.

FMU moves to 19-4 overall and 3-3 in the PBC, while GSW is 9-13 and 4-5.  The Patriots will host North Greenville University for a single game on Wednesday at 3 p.m.  South Florence and West Florence High Schools will play each other following the FMU/NGU tilt.

The Patriots were limited to two runs on 14 hits over the first 18 innings of the three-game series.

The game-two outburst included a 5-run ninth frame that snapped a 7-7 deadlock.  The game-winning rally saw runs score on a throwing error, a wild pitch, a sacrifice fly by senior shortstop Zach Callahan, a triple by sophomore right fielder Cole Hinnant, and a single by senior designated hitter Logan Koch.

Junior right-hander Austin Hawley (3-2) earned the win in relief as he tossed 3.2 innings and allowed only one run on four hits.  Freshman righty Sam High got the start and pitched four innings, surrendering only one earned run on four hits, while fanning three.

Junior catcher William Robbins led the Patriots at the plate with three hits, while junior outfielder Reese Cooley, and Callahan both two hits.  Koch drove in three runs, while junior left fielder Brooks Kennedy and Callahan both had two RBIs.

FMU had taken a 2-0 lead in the top of the second, but GSW answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame.  The Patriots scored once in the fourth and four times in the fifth to take a 7-3 advantage.  Run-scoring doubles by junior first baseman Tee DuBose and Callahan highlighted the fifth inning.

However, the Hurricanes scored four times in the sixth to knot the score at 7-7.

GSW relief pitcher Andrew Patrick (0-1) allowed the first four runs in the top of the ninth and was tagged with the loss.  Left fielder Jonathan Martin was 4-for-5 with two runs scored and one driven for the Hurricanes in the second contest.

In game one, GSW took a 1-0 lead on first baseman Jared Jones' one-out run-scoring single to left center.

FMU loaded the bases in the third and had runners on first and third in the eighth, but were unable to score until the top of ninth.  In the last frame, Callahan led off with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Kennedy.  Koch followed with an RBI single through the left side knotting the game at 1-1.  Hinnant singled putting runners on first and second and forcing the Hurricanes to bring in relief pitcher Mitch Holloway (3-1).  After a passed ball allowed the runners to move up to second and third, Holloway got the next two batters to ground back to the mound.

In the bottom of the frame, a lead-off single by center fielder Evan Alderman chased FMU freshman lefty Garrett Wilson (4-1) from the mound and Hinnant moved from right field to pitch.  A ground out moved Alderson into scoring position, but after Hinnant walked Jones, he got the next Hurricane to foul out for the second out.  Barron singled to left field and Alderman beat the throw home with the winning tally.

Wilson pitched well enough to win on most days, as he surrendered two runs on seven hits with three strikeouts in eight innings.  GSW starter Jordan McIlwain scattered eight hits and allowed FMU's lone run in 8.1 innings.

Cooley also had two hits in game one. With hits in both games, Koch extended his hitting streak to eight games.
