FLORENCE, SC – Freshman left-handed pitcher Garrett Wilson tossed a seven-hit complete game as 12th-ranked Francis Marion University defeated the College of Saint Rose 7-2, Sunday afternoon (March 5) sweeping the non-conference three-game baseball series.
FMU, now 17-2, will travel to Orangeburg on Wednesday to face Claflin University at 4 p.m. The next home contest for the Patriots will be March 15 at 3 p.m. against North Greenville University.
Wilson improved to 4-0 as he struck out four and walked only one.
The Patriots staked Wilson to an early 2-0 advantage in the first frame.
After Saint Rose (0-6) scored a single run in the second, junior right fielder Zach Paquette restored the two-run cushion with an RBI groundout in the fourth frame. Kenny Fils-Aime's run-scoring double in the top of the sixth again brought the Golden Knights to within a single run at 3-2.
However, the Patriots plated four runs in the last of eighth to take a 7-2 lead. Two runs scored on separate wild pitches and senior second baseman Antonio Pino drove in one tally with a single.
Paquette registered an eighth-inning single to extend his hitting streak to nine games, while he also extended his streak of safely reaching base to 15 games.
Center fielder Matt McKinnon and second baseman Andrew Pedone each had two hits for Saint Rose. Golden Knights' starter Steve Burke (0-1) was the losing pitcher.
