FLORENCE, SC – Nine Francis Marion University pitchers fanned a combined 11 batters, while combining on a three-hitter as the Patriots blanked Virginia State University 17-0, Wednesday evening (March 9) in non-conference baseball action.
The Patriots improve to 14-6 and will host 13th-ranked USC Aiken for a three-game series this coming weekend. The two long-time rivals will play single games on Friday at 6 p.m., Saturday at 3 p.m., and Sunday at 1 p.m.
Virginia State dropped to 1-13 with Wednesday night's loss.
Senior right-hander Fernando Pinillos (4-1) was credited with the win as he was the pitcher of record in the second inning when the Patriots pushed across their first run. Each of the nine hurlers pitched one inning apiece. Junior right John McGinty struck out the side in the eighth.
FMU senior JD Crowe was 2-for-4 with a pair of walks to extend his streak of safely reaching base to 52 games. He also clouted his fourth home run of the season, while scoring three times and driving in three.
Freshman Cole Hinnant was 2-for-5 with a triple, two runs scored, and three RBIs. He also pitched a scoreless inning from the mound.
VSU starter Larry Stephens (0-4) was tagged with the loss. Catcher David Markins was 2-for-3 at the plate for the Trojans.
