FMU bats pound Warriors in doubleheader sweep

CENTRAL, S.C. – Junior left fielder JD Crowe registered six hits and Francis Marion University pounded out 35 hits en route to a doubleheader sweep of Southern Wesleyan University as the Patriots won 18-6 and 5-1, Saturday afternoon (Feb. 14) in non-conference baseball action.

Francis Marion improves to 6-3, while Southern Wesleyan drops to 3-5.  FMU will travel to Barton College on Wednesday for a 3 p.m. start.  The Patriots will then open Peach Belt Conference play on Saturday with a Homecoming 3 p.m. first-pitch against Armstrong State University.

Three Patriots recorded four-hit games in the opener as FMU rapped out 26 hits, three shy of the school record and equaling the third-highest single-game effort in team history.

Crowe (4-for-6, RBI), junior right fielder Shuler Ward (4-for-5, RBI), and sophomore third baseman Zach Callahan (4-for-5, 3 RBIs) led FMU at the plate.  Junior center fielder Casey Clauss (3-for-7, RBI) and senior second baseman Matt Rubino (3-for-5, 2 RBIs) were also among eight Patriots with multi-hit performances.

Junior left-hander Daniel Barfield (1-0) earned his first win of 2015 as he pitched 3.2 innings of relief. He allowed two runs on four hits with four strikeouts. Junior southpaw Jimmy Lindberg started and pitched the first three innings, while junior righty Ty Simpson finished up with 2.1 innings of work.

Southern Wesleyan starter Hamilton Hartsell (0-2) was tagged with the loss after surrendering eight runs (five earned) on 13 hits in six frames.

FMU trailed 3-2 heading to the top of the fourth, but scored four times with two outs. Junior shortstop Randy Loew's two-run home run over the left field fence gave Francis Marion a 6-3 advantage.  The Warriors answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth and scored a single tally in the sixth to knot the score at 6-6.

Francis Marion scored eight times on eight hits in the top of the seventh, and then added four insurance runs in the ninth. Crowe doubled twice, scored twice, and drove in one run during the seventh-inning outburst, while Rubino walked and scored and stroked a two-run single in the same frame.

In game two, FMU senior right-hander Jordy Santak (1-0) pitched six strong innings and senior lefty Cody Dix earned his first save of 2015 by getting the final three outs of the seven-inning contest.  Santak allowed only four hits, while fanning nine.

The score was deadlocked at 1-1 entering the top of the fifth.  The Patriots plated four runs on four hits and one Warrior error.  Loew, Crowe, and Rubino all rapped out RBI hits, while senior catcher Nicholas McGee delivered a sacrifice fly.

Southern Wesleyan put their first two batters on base in the final frame before Dix entered to record the final three outs.

Crowe finished the second contest 2-for-4, while senior first baseman Conner Wessel was 2-for-3 and Rubino was 2-for-3.

Warrior starter Tyler Rio (0-1) was the losing pitcher although only three of the runs he surrendered were earned.  Southern Wesleyan first baseman Daniel Williams finished the twinbill 3-for-7 with two runs scored, two extra-base hits, and two runs driven in.
