Patriots edged by #30 UNC Pembroke

Florence, S.C. (April 12, 2014) – Just as Francis Marion University did the night before, No. 30 UNC Pembroke rallied from a late deficit and knocked off the Patriots 8-7 Saturday afternoon in the second game of a Peach Belt Conference baseball series from Sparrow Stadium.

FMU slips to 22-18 overall and 8-14 in PBC play. The rubber match of the series will take place on Sunday (April 13) at 2 p.m.

Senior righty Jeffrey Stoner (2-3) was saddled with the loss after allowing a run on three hits and dishing out a walk. UNCP (29-13, 14-9) reliever Zach Andrews (3-5) earned the win after only allowing a run on three hits in three and a third innings out of the bullpen.

At the plate, senior outfielder Marquis Curry was a perfect 3-for-3 with an RBI, two runs scored, and a walk. Junior second baseman Brett Fulmer recorded two base knocks with an RBI and a run scored, while senior designated hitter Dalton Gress finished 1-for-4 at the plate and also registered an RBI and a run scored.

FMU was first on the scoreboard with an RBI groundout by senior first baseman David DeWolfe in the bottom of the second. After the Braves tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the fourth inning, FMU quickly re-took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the frame. Gress and Fulmer both tallied RBI singles in the inning.

UNCP struck for a run in the top of the fifth, and took a 5-3 lead after scoring three runs in the top of the sixth. However, the lead wouldn't last long as FMU answered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning to take a 6-5 lead.

Tollison scored on a wild pitch after singling to start the frame. Fulmer scored on a fielding error by UNCP third baseman Jordan Egerton, and junior right fielder Zac Lenns drew an RBI walk with the bases loaded.

The Patriots added a run to their lead on an RBI single by Curry in the bottom of the seventh, but UNCP tallied two runs in the top of the eighth to tie the game at 7-7. FMU was one out away from leaving the game tied in the top of the ninth inning, but an error by sophomore Cole Morris at second base allowed the go-ahead run to cross the plate. Andrews sat down the Patriots 1-2-3 in the bottom of the ninth to seal the one-run victory.

Drew Cole led the way for UNCP at the plate with two hits and two RBIs. Brett Huffman finished 3-for-5, while Chad Whitehead registered two hits, scored a run, and added an RBI.
