Patriots rally for four-set victory against Bobcats

MILLEDGEVILLE, GA – Sophomore outside hitter Georgia Garrison registered 14 kills, a team-high 19 digs, two blocks, and a service ace as Francis Marion University was victorious in four sets 20-25, 25-23, 25-19, 25-17 over Georgia College, Saturday afternoon (Oct. 1) in Peach Belt Conference women's volleyball action.

FMU ups its overall mark to 10-6 and improves its conference record to 4-3, while Georgia College drops to 8-4 and 3-3.   Francis Marion returns home on Wednesday night to face PBC foe USC Aiken. First serve is set for 7 p.m. as the Patriots will host their annual Sea of Red Match. Fans and students are encouraged to wear red in support of FMU.

Senior Caroline Boone led the Patriots with 15 kills, while freshman Lenee' Blot finished with six kills and eight blocks – an individual season-high for any FMU player. Senior Carlie Smith and junior Erika Hartings each tallied eight kills, while Hartings compiled four blocks and Smith delivered two service aces.

Boone hit .343 on 36 swings, while Garrison hit .333 on 35 swings.

Sophomore setter Carrie McGinnis guided the Francis Marion offense by tallying 45 assists, while digging up 12 balls.  Freshman Natalie Vaughn assumed the libero role for the Patriots over the final three sets and compiled 18 digs, served two aces, and was flawless in 17 serve receptions.

Ashley Savransky led the Bobcats with 11 kills, while setter Kayla Brockway recorded 29 assists and 15 digs. Chandler Ewaldsen registered a match-high 20 digs for Georgia College.

Despite hitting .379 as a team, Francis Marion dropped the opening set to the Bobcats. Kills by Smith and Boone snapped a 23-23 deadlock in set two.  Trailing 15-10 in the third set, FMU closed with a 15-4 run, which included three kills from Boone and two by Garrison and the Patriots were aided by six Bobcat attack errors.  In the fourth set, FMU scored the first five points and never trailed.
