Patriots finish 1-1 at Belmont Abbey tri-match

Belmont, N.C. (Nov. 2, 2013) – The Francis Marion University volleyball team finished 1-1 at the Belmont Abbey tri-match Saturday night in Belmont, N.C.

FMU (18-6, 9-4 PBC) began the day with a 3-0 sweep of North Greenville University, before being edged 3-2 by Belmont Abbey College in the final match of the day.
 
The Patriots return to Peach Belt Conference play Friday, Nov. 8, as they travel to Milledgeville, Ga., to face Georgia College. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
 
FMU Blanks North Greenville 3-0

The Patriots got a double-double from junior Sloan Shank, and cruised to a 3-0 sweep (25-19,25-17,25-20) of North Greenville University at the Belmont Abbey tri-match Saturday afternoon.

Shank finished with a match-high 39 assists and 12 digs. Senior Jessica Imbimbo paced the FMU offense with a match-high 13 kills, while junior Rebekah Davis picked up a match-high 13 digs. Junior Emily Sears added 12 kills while hitting .409.

North Greenville (7-25) was led by Rachel Burts who had seven kills, and Megan Steading who recorded eight digs.

The Patriots jumped out to a 13-4 lead midway through the first set, and never looked back as they earned a 25-19 set victory. After winning the second set 25-17, FMU trailed the Crusaders for the first time in the match at 13-11 in the third set.

However, the Patriots would reel off a 9-4 run to take a 20-17 late in the set. NGU would get back within a point at 21-20, but FMU shut the door with a 4-0 run to win the set 25-20, and close out the match.

Patriots edged 3-2 by Belmont Abbey

Belmont Abbey rallied from a 2-1 deficit to knock off Francis Marion 3-2 (25-21, 18-25, 13-25, 25-15, 15-13) in the nightcap of the Belmont Abbey tri-match Saturday night.

Senior Jessica Imbimbo registered a double-double with 15 digs and 12 kills, while senior setter Kailey Smith tallied a match-high 44 assists. Junior Rebekah Davis led all players with 23 digs, while sophomore Alexzandra Reed and junior Emily Sears chipped in 12 and 10 kills respectively.

Hannah Schellenburg paced Belmont Abbey (22-3) with a match-high 18 kills and 16 digs. Lydia Schellenburg also recorded a double-double with 12 kills and 18 digs.

After the Crusaders won the first set 25-21, FMU knotted the match at 1-1 after a 25-18 second-set victory, due in part to an 11-0 run early in the set. The Patriots used the momentum of the second set victory to lead wire-to-wire in set three and win 25-13.

Facing a 2-1 deficit, Belmont Abbey began their rally in the fourth set by jumping out to a 20-9 lead. FMU would only get within seven points of the lead, and the Crusaders forced a decisive fifth set after winning set four 25-15.

With the match tied at 4-4 in the winner-take-all fifth set, Belmont Abbey reeled off a 9-3 run to increase its lead to 13-7. The Patriots would counter with a 5-0 run of its own to pull within a point of the lead at 13-12.

The Crusaders answered with a kill from Caitlin Hankins to earn match-point, but an Imbimbo kill set the score at 14-13. However, Hankins recorded her 11th kill of the match the next play to earn Belmont Abbey a 15-13 fifth set victory.
