Patriots split two matches in volleyball invite

FLORENCE, SC – Freshman hitter Riley Forester registered a pair of double-figure kill matches as Francis Marion University split two contests on the final day of the annual FMU Invitational Volleyball Tournament, Saturday (Sept. 4) in the Smith University Center.

Forester had 11 kills, 16 digs, and six service aces in a three-game sweep (25-12, 28-26, 25-19) of Brenau University to conclude the tournament. Earlier in the day, FMU lost a hard-fought four-game match (25-23, 21-25, 25-22, 25-22) to Carson-Newman College.

In the loss to the Eagles, junior Amanda Mitchell totaled a team-high 12 kills, while junior Ashlee Crook had 11 kills and 15 digs and Forester 10 kills. Freshman setter Nicole Bennett recorded 42 assists and 15 digs, while senior libero Kelsie Deaton dug up 19 balls.

Aiding Forester in the victory, freshman Paige Perreault added nine kills, while Bennett handed out 35 assists. The Patriots served 14 aces in the win.

Francis Marion (3-1) will play in the Mount Olive College Tournament on Sept 10-11, opening with Millersville University on Friday at noon.
