Volleyball Team BLOG for 2009-10

BLOG from junior Mallory Eggert (9-16-09)

Once school began on August 26, it was time for all of us to get back into the swing of things. Morning 6 a.m. workouts, classes, afternoon practice and school work all consume our days. Being this busy not only makes it hard for the freshmen, but also for the returners. But
by doing all of this, it has only made us stronger. We strive for the best on the court and the classroom.

The first weekend of school we departed for Tennessee to compete in Carson-Newman's Tournament. We went two and two. We had our ups and downs while we were there. As it was our first tournament, we learned two things: we are really good, but we still had a lot of work to do. Our team is young compared to others so we are still getting our vibe together. Overall though our trip was a lot of fun. We all get along so well, which helped the long bus ride not seem so long.

The following weekend we had our first home tournament. The majority of our parents came for the weekend so it was nice for us all to see them and to have a good cheering section including our normal fans. Our tournament included a lot of good competition for us and I think we really took a lot away from that. We again went two and two.

In the practices following these two tournaments we have been working really hard to be the best we can be, both mentally and physically. And it seems to really be showing. We have so much heart and ability on our team that our future is looking really bright!

GO PATS!

If I had to use one word to describe this year's preseason it would be hopeful. The entire team, nine returners and three freshmen, came together for the first time and, as cheesy as it may sound, it was amazing. The team "clicked" right away. We were laughing and joking around with each other as if we had been playing together for a while. Needless to say, it was a great way to start a new season.

We first stepped on the court together on August 12, and this is when I began to feel sort of hopeful. What exactly was I hopeful for? The season to come. The returners looked great. We stayed in shape and in the mental mindset that we left last season with. The freshmen came in, not nervous and quiet like in years past, but confident and eager to get started. All of this showed on the court throughout preseason.

In addition to going hard physically on the court, we also took some time out to do some team bonding. One thing that we did was go kayaking. Each girl and coach got their own kayak and paddled their way for a couple of miles down the Little Pee Dee River. A few hours and a strenuous arm workout later, I think each girl was pleased to say they had a really good time and that it truly was a one-of-a-kind experience. The other team bonding activity, that we have yet to do, is a road rally scavenger hunt. This is sure to be highly competitive and very much fun as proved in years past.

All in all the past couple of weeks with the team have been extremely promising. On and off the court this year's preseason has been one of the best in all of my four years, and I think it is safe to say that this year's team is going to be very enjoyable to watch and also a team that will demand excellence.
