Francis Marion drops volleyball match to Montevallo

FLORENCE, SC - Senior outside hitter Katy Handrick tallied 10 kills and eight digs to lead the University of Montevallo to a 3-game sweep (25-21, 25-18, 25-20) of Francis Marion University, Friday evening (Oct. 30) in Peach Belt Conference women's volleyball action.

Francis Marion (11-15, 3-7) will play its Senior Day match on Saturday when the Patriots entertain Augusta State University at 3 p.m.  Montevallo (15-12, 5-6), in its first year in the Peach Belt, will play at UNC Pembroke on Saturday, also at 3 p.m.

Sophomore Ashlyn Underhill led FMU with eight kills.  Senior setter Jess O'Leary handed out 14 assists, while sophomore setter Hallie Legg had 12 assists.  O'Leary registered a double-double as she added 10 digs.  Junior libero Kelsie Deaton dug up a team-high 18 balls, while sophomore Ashlee Crook recorded 15 digs.

Following Handrick, Virginia Clay compiled nine kills and six blocks.  Sophomore setter Anna Garrison dished out 38 assists and had 11 digs.  Freshman libero Brittany Wilson compiled 20 digs and served three aces.  The Falcons held FMU to a .050 team hitting percentage.

Francis Marion led 11-5 in game one only to see the Falcons rally to take the lead at 14-13 and eventually gain the opening win.  Leading 13-12 in game two, Montevallo won 10 of the next 11 points to cruise to the 25-18 victory, and in the final game, the Falcons jumped to an early 9-4 advantage and never trailed again.
