Patriots win two at Swamp Fox Invitational
FLORENCE, SC - Senior Jessica Lombardi tallied 11 kills in each of two matches on Friday (Sept. 19) to lead Francis Marion University to a pair of victories on the first day of the Swamp Fox Invitational.
Francis Marion beat Montreat College 25-22, 25-22, 21-25, 25-15 in the morning and returned to the court eight hours later to dispatch Franklin Pierce University 25-19, 25-17, 25-21.
FMU improves to 9-4 with the wins.
In other action on Friday, Franklin Pierce beat Fayetteville
State University 25-27, 25-22, 22-25, 25-15, 15-10; Carson-Newman
College defeated Augusta State University 25-21, 25-14, 25-21;
Carson-Newman beat Montreat 25-16, 25-21, 25-11; and Augusta State
downed Fayetteville State 25-12, 25-15, 25-15.
The six-team event will continue on Saturday with matches at 9 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 3 p.m., 5 p.m., and 7 p.m. Francis Marion will play Carson-Newman College at 3 p.m. and Fayetteville State University at 7 p.m.
In the opening win over Montreat, Lombardi led FMU with 11 kills, 10 digs, and seven total blocks. Freshman Ashlyn Underhill added nine kills. Junior setter Jess O'Leary handed out 37 assists, while sophomore libero Kelsie Deaton dug up a match-high 21 balls.
Sophomore Allison Baumgartner led Montreat (6-9) with 21 kills, 10 digs, and five blocks. Freshman Brandy Deddo added 13 kills and 18 digs, while freshman setter Natalie Nieman compiled 37 assists.
In the nightcap against FPU, Lombardi and freshman Amanda Mitchell both registered 11 kills, while senior setter Jenna Kaiser recorded 39 assists and 11 digs.
Senior Nicole Buchholz paced the Ravens with 10 kills, while setter Karissa Hookstadt dished out 27 assists and Katie Ristow had a team-high 11 digs.
