AIKEN, SC – The 29th-ranked Francis Marion University men's tennis upset 15th-ranked USC Aiken 5-1 and the 41st-ranked Patriot women edged USCA 5-4, Wednesday afternoon (April 2) in Peach Belt Conference action.
Both FMU squads move into fourth place in the PBC standings as the men improve to 7-3 overall and 4-2 in the conference and the women to 10-3 and 6-2.
The Patriot men won all three doubles matches and freshman Richard Ashforth and junior Marius Wahlier captured singles win at slots No.2 and 3. Ashforth remains unbeaten in his collegiate career at 9-0, including 6-0 in Peach Belt competition.
In the women's match, Francis Marion took two of the three doubles matches and then saw freshman Samantha Koelliker, sophomore Nora Westbye, and senior Kimberley Hurter win singles matches at positions No.1, 3, and 4.
Both Francis Marion squads will return home to host GRU Augusta on Saturday at 11 a.m. and Georgia College on Sunday at 11 a.m. All four squads coming to Florence this weekend are ranked in the lastest ITA national polls.
