SUMTER, SC – The Francis Marion University women's tennis doubles team of junior Julia Graf and sophomore Nora Westbye reached the finals of the recent USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Tennis Tournament, hosted by the Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter, S.C.
Altogether 11 Patriot players competed in the four-day event.
Graf and Westbye won four matches in the Doubles A Flight, before falling in the championship contest to the top-seeded squad from Columbus State University. Graf also reached the Round of 16 in the Singles A Flight before being eliminated.
In the men's draw, FMU junior Marius Wahlier won four matches to reach the Singles B Flight title match. The championship match was canceled on Monday due to travel considerations.
Patriot freshman Richard Ashford won three matches to advance to the quarterfinals of the B Flight.
The USTA/ITA Regional Championships feature some of the top men's and women's players across the country. Over 8,000 student-athletes from NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA, Junior and Community Colleges will compete at one of the 84 USTA/ITA Regional Championships held across the country.
The A Flight singles and doubles winners advance to the USTA/ITA National Small College Championships, held October 10-13 at the Three Oaks Tennis Center in Fort Myers, Fla.
