Francis Marion University freshman women's tennis player Lena Specht has been selected as the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) 2013 Rookie of the Year for the NCAA Division II Southeast Region.
Specht, a native of Schwetzingen, Germany, compiled a 20-1 singles mark, mainly at the No. 5 position, including a 10-1 record in conference play. Her overall season mark was the second-best singles record in program history behind only a 21-1 record set by All-American Jitka Gavdunova in 2009. Specht won 42 of the 46 sets she completed in 2013.
Specht also registered a 20-4 doubles record, including 11-2 against Peach Belt competition.
Last month, she was named the Peach Belt Conference's Freshman of the Year.
Specht helped lead the Francis Marion women to a 23-4 record, equaling the program record for victories in a season, and a No.11 national ranking. FMU placed third at the Peach Belt Tournament, earned its seventh NCAA Tournament invitation in the past eight years, and reached the regional title match for the fifth time in the past six seasons.
