FMU blanks Bobcats in 3rd-Place Match

FLORENCE, SC – Freshman Nora Westbye helped win a marathon match at No.2 doubles and then earned a straight-sets singles win at No.6 to help guide 10th-ranked and third-seeded Francis Marion University to a 5-0 victory over 43rd-ranked and fifth-seeded Georgia College, Sunday morning (April 14) in the third-place match at the 2013 Peach Belt Conference Women's Tennis Tournament.  The three-day event was held at the Dr. Eddie Floyd Florence Tennis Center.

Francis Marion improves to 22-3, one win shy of the program's single-season record.  The Patriots will now await the announcement of the NCAA Division II National Tournament field, in about 10 days, to see which regional they will participate in.

Freshman Lena Specht and junior Kimberley Hurter gave FMU its first point with an 8-1 win at No.3 doubles.  Senior Mona Blauen and sophomore Julia Graf followed with an 8-5 victory at No.1 doubles to put FMU ahead 2-0. Westbye and junior Tereza Baranova completed the doubles sweep with a 9-8 win at No.2 dou bles, a contest decided by a 7-2 tiebreaker.

Specht quickly earned a 6-0, 6-0 decision at No.5 singles – her 19th singles victory of the year against only one defeat – and Westbye followed with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No.6 singles.  She is 12-1 in singles play this season, including 11 consecutive wins.

Top-ranked and top-seeded Armstrong Atlantic State University defeated Columbus State University 5-0 in the title match.
