FMU’s Gavdunova named PBC Player of the Week
Francis Marion University senior Jitka Gavdunova has been selected as the Peach Belt Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week for the opening week of the 2012 season.
Gavdunova, currently ranked ninth nationally among NCAA Division II women's singles players, won her singles match last week in quick fashion 6-0, 6-0 as the Patriot women blanked Mount Olive College 9-0. She also teamed with Mona Blauen for an 8-2 win at the No. 1 doubles position. Their doubles team is ranked 11th nationally.
The native of Vejprty, Czech Republic, improved her career singles record to 54-6. A two-time All-American, she was recently named to the preseason All-Conference squad.
For the team's home opener, the Patriots will play host to Erskine College on Friday (Feb. 10) at 2 p.m. on the Kassab Courts. The match is a key regional contest as FMU is ranked eighth in the preseason Southeast Region poll, while the Flying Fleet are ranked ninth.
