FMU Women fall 1-0 in season opener at HPU

HIGH POINT, NC -- Becca Hemby scored on a header off a free kick 1:16 into the second half to give High Point University a 1-0 season-opening win over Francis Marion University, Friday evening (Aug. 20) in women's college soccer action.

The match featured the Patriots facing former head coach Marty Beall, now in his second season with the Panthers.

Francis Marion (0-1-0) will continue its three-match, season-opening road swing in the Tar Heel state with a 2 p.m. match on Sunday at East Carolina University.

High Point led the fairly evenly played match with seven shots to the Patriots' six.  Both squads had two shots on goal and the Panthers led 2-1 in corner kicks.  High Point committed seven fouls, while FMU was whistled for six.

FMU junior goalkeeper Casey Durham registered one save, while High Point's Andrea Ritchie made two stops en route to the shutout.  

Junior Kiley Williams led Francis Marion with three shots, one of which was on frame.  FMU's starting line-up included five freshmen and two sophomores.
