Patriots drop 3-0 decision at Samford

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Francis Marion University women's soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision at Samford University on Sunday afternoon (Aug. 30).

Samford's Natalie Fleming, Amber Cress, and Sarah Wilkinson all scored goals in the win, while goalkeeper Alyssa Whitehead extended her shutout streak to 279 minutes.

Samford improves to 2-0-1, while FMU falls to 0-4.  The Patriots will play at UNC Charlotte on Friday at 7 p.m.

Francis Marion was outshot by Samford, 14-5, but was paced offensively by midfielders Angela Salem and Jennifer Dyer, both of whom finished with two shot attempts Sunday.  Samford also led in corner kicks 9-2. 

Samford quickly jumped out to a 1-0 lead during the sixth minute of play as Fleming scored her first goal of the season off an assist from Cress.

After scoring at the 5:48 mark in the first half, Samford didn't score again until the 64th minute of play.  Cress and Wilkinson tallied their goals less than three minutes apart in the second half.

FMU sophomore goalkeeper Casey Durham recorded four saves.

Dyer had a shot-on-goal in the 40th minute, while Salem had one of her two shots stopped by the Bulldog keeper in the 75th minute.
