Patriot rally falls just short in 3-2 loss
FLORENCE, SC - Kiley Williams and Angela Salem scored second-half goals but Francis Marion University was unable to overcome a 3-0 deficit and the Patriots lost to Charleston Southern University 3-2, Sunday afternoon (Sept. 27) in women's soccer action.
Francis Marion (1-10-1) will return to action on Wednesday with a 7 p.m. kickoff at Gardner-Webb University.
Junior forwards Michelle Dennis and Marky Boyce put Charleston Southern (7-3-0) up 2-0 with goals in the fourth and 12 minutes. Boyce assisted on the first goal that saw Dennis chip the ball past FMU goalkeeper Emily Brandenburg who came charging out off her goal line. Boyce's goal was a hard strike from 17 yards out that ended up in the upper left corner of the net.
The Buccaneers outshot FMU 8-3 in the opening half and dominated much of the play.
However, the Patriots rebounded in the second stanza and nearly pulled out the come-from-behind win. One minute after halftime, FMU's Kelly Kady made a long run down the left sideline and then angled in toward the goal but her shot was stopped by CSU senior goalkeeper Jena Lalich. In the 55th minute, Patriot midfielder Rebecca Nelson shot from 20-yards out but Lalich pushed the ball up and off the crossbar. The ball then rebounded to Kady whose header was then stopped by Lalich.
At the 63:48 mark, Boyce scored her second goal of the match and seventh of the season on a 20-yard chip shot after taking a long pass from Sarah Catenacci. The 3-0 lead would be short-lived.
FMU's Williams collected a loose ball in the box and scored on a 13-yard blast at 64:27. Patriot senior Angela Salem possessed a CSU clearance and then scored on a 23-yard shot to bring FMU to within 3-2 with 4:16 remaining. It was Salem's 13th career score in 66 matches.
The Patriots were not able to get off a potential tying attempt in the final four minutes.
Francis Marion outshot Charleston 10-7 in the final half. CSU led in shots 15-13 for the entire match and held a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Brandenburg registered five saves, while Lalich had six stops.
