Game-ending run dooms Patriot Women to 68-63 loss

MORROW, GA – Clayton State University ended the game with a 13-0 run over the final 4:15 to claim a 68-63 Peach Belt Conference win over Francis Marion University, Saturday afternoon (Feb. 3) in women's basketball action.

Francis Marion (13-7, 10-5) drops into a tie for fifth place in the PBC standings.  FMU will play at second-place Lander University on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m., before returning home to host conference-leading University of North Georgia for Homecoming on Feb. 10 at 1:30 p.m.

FMU senior guard Khai Chandler and junior forward Shaunice Fulmore each scored 24 points to lead the Patriots. Fulmore also hauled down 12 rebounds to record her second straight double-double and fifth of the year.

TaKwana Bland came off the bench to score 18 points to pace the Lakers (10-11, 7-8). She registered seven points in the game-ending run.

With exception of an early tie, FMU held the advantage during the first quarter.  Francis Marion grabbed a six-point lead at 30-24 in the second period after a bucket by Chandler, but Clayton State gradually battled back and held a 40-39 advantage at halftime.

After falling behind by four at 45-41 in the third quarter, Francis Marion used a 9-2 spurt to retake the lead at 50-47 with 5:03 left in the period.  The Patriots held a 53-50 lead as the quarter ended.

Six points by Fulmore and four by Chandler helped FMU open a 63-55 margin with 5:07 remaining in the contest.  However, the Patriots would not score again, missing their final seven shots and committing four turnovers, while the Lakers scored the game's final 13 points.

Francis Marion shot 42.9 percent from the field and was 8-of-14 at the free throw line.  Clayton State connected on 39 percent of its field goal attempts and hit 17-of-22 charity tosses.
