Chandler and Fulmore shoot Patriots past Pacers 68-56

FLORENCE, SC – Senior Khai Chandler and junior Shaunice Fulmore scored 26 and 24 points respectively to power Francis Marion University to a 68-56 Peach Belt Conference victory over USC Aiken, Wednesday evening (Jan. 31) in women's basketball action.

Francis Marion improves to 13-6 overall and 10-4 in the conference, and is in a three-way tie for third place in the PBC standings.  FMU plays at Clayton State University on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. and at Lander University on Feb. 7 at 5:30 p.m., before returning home to entertain the University of North Georgia on Feb. 10 for Homecoming at 1:30 p.m.

Chandler connected on 8-of-16 shots, including 6-of-12 three-point attempts, and was 4-of-6 at the foul line.  She also grabbed six rebounds and handed out three assists.  The Raleigh, N.C., native pushed her career point total to 1,343 and passed former Francis Marion great Danielle Moore (2002-06) for 14th place on the FMU career scoring list.

Fulmore shot 10-of-21 from the field, including a trio of made three-pointers, and was 1-of-2 at the free throw stripe.  She hauled down a team-high 10 rebounds to post her fourth double-double of the year.  She also moved up the career scoring list – past LaRue Fields and Cherita Linton – and into 21st position with 1,181 points.

Junior guard Kyrie' Chandler paced USCA (5-15, 2-12) with 18 points, while sophomore guard Melyk Taouil scored 16 points.  Junior 6-1 center Star Toomey registered a double-double with 10 points and 15 rebounds.

Holding a narrow 15-13 lead, Francis Marion closed the first quarter on an 8-3 spurt to claim a 23-16 advantage.  The margin swelled to double digits at 36-24 following a three-pointer by Fulmore with 4:09 left before halftime.  As the Patriots did at the end of the first period, FMU closed the second quarter with a 13-2 run to assume a 43-26 halftime lead.  Chandler scored 18 of her points in the opening 20 minutes, including hitting 5-of-7 three-point attempts.

FMU led by as many as 18 points early in the third quarter, but USCA rallied to trim the deficit to 53-43 as the period ended.  A lay-in by Taouil to start the fourth quarter brought the Pacers to within eight points (53-45), but a three-pointer by Chandler sparked a 6-0 run that pushed the margin back to double figures and the Patriots would hold off any further Pacer rally.

Francis Marion shot 44.2 percent from the field, was 10-of-27 from three-point range, and made 12-of-20 free throws.  FMU held the Pacers to 37.7 percent shooting, including 3-of-11 from behind the arc, and USCA made 13-of-16 free throws.

The Patriots held a 36-29 rebounding advantage and committed only 14 turnovers while forcing 17.
