Third-Quarter proves decisive in 66-58 Patriot loss

MILLEDGEVILLE, GA – A 22-6 third quarter run by Georgia College expanded the Bobcats' lead to double-digits and eventually resulted in a 66-58 victory over Francis Marion University, Saturday afternoon (Jan. 27) in Peach Belt Conference women's basketball action.

The Patriots fall to 12-6 overall and 9-4 in the conference, while GC improves to 12-7 and 9-4. FMU will be back in action on Wednesday (Jan. 31) at 5:30 p.m. as USC Aiken will make its way to the Smith University Center.

FMU senior guard Khai Chandler led all scorers with 25 points, while junior Shaunice Fulmore accounted for 22 points for the Patriots. Chandler surpassed the 1,300-point mark for her career during the contest.

Senior Alyah McGriff led the Bobcats with 22 points, followed by senior guard Brianna Davis with 16.

In a low-scoring first quarter, there were a total of 14 turnovers (seven by each squad), as the Bobcats took a 9-7 lead.

As the Patriots were down 17-9 at the 5:42 mark of the second quarter, Chandler would spark a 13-0 spurt with a three-pointer that eventually led to a 22-17 FMU advantage. Chandler tallied 10 points during that run, while Fulmore tallied the other three points. GC would cut the Patriot lead to 24-22 with 1:32 until halftime, and that would be the score heading into the intermission.

A bucket by Fulmore gave Francis Marion a 28-26 margin early in the third quarter, but Georgia College then ended the stanza with a 22-6 run and took a 14-point lead (48-34) into the final quarter. Davis led the run with nine points on three shots from behind the arc.

FMU would cut the Bobcats' lead to single digits in the fourth quarter, but could not complete the comeback.

Francis Marion shot 35.5 percent from the field and 8-of-12 from the charity stripe, while GC was 47.4 percent from the floor and 7-of-19 from the free-throw stripe. The Patriots scored 19 points off of 21 Bobcat turnovers, while Georgia College had 22 points off of 20 FMU turnovers.
