Bullock nets career-high 34 in 82-63 Patriot win

FLORENCE, SC – Francis Marion University sophomore guard Abigail Bullock scored a career-high 34 points on 11-of-18 shooting and the Patriots pulled away in the second half to claim an 82-63 victory over UNC Pembroke, Wednesday evening (Jan. 24) in Peach Belt Conference women's basketball action.

The Patriots up their overall record to 12-5 and their PBC mark to 9-3, good for sole possession of third place, only one-and-a-half games behind the conference leader.

FMU will travel to Georgia College for a 1:30 p.m. contest on Saturday, before hosting USC Aiken on Jan. 31 at 5:30 p.m.

Bullock also canned 6-of-9 three-pointers and was 6-of-7 at the foul line.  Senior guard Khai Chandler tallied 22 points and junior Shaunice Fulmore added 20 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists.

Prior to tip-off, Chandler, Fulmore, and injured senior Briana Burgins were presented game balls for surpassing 1000 career points this season.

Senior guard Nyla Allen led UNCP (6-10, 4-8) with 17 points, while freshman Melanie Horne came off the Braves' bench and scored 13 points – all in the opening half.

After trailing 39-38 at halftime, Francis Marion outscored UNC Pembroke 26-9 in the third period and 44-24 over the final 20 minutes.

Back-to-back three-pointers by Chandler opened the third quarter scoring and put FMU ahead for good.  The Patriots connected on 9-of-16 field goal attempts (including 5-of-6 from behind the arc) in that period.  A 15-3 spurt pushed the FMU advantage to 62-45 with 1:15 remaining in the third.

The Braves never got closer than 13 points in the fourth and final quarter.

The first half featured five ties and six lead changes.  The Braves led 22-17 at the end of the first period.  Francis Marion rallied to take a 38-33 lead after a pair of free throws by Bullock, but UNCP scored the final six points of the half to assume the 39-38 lead at intermission.  Bullock scored 20 of her points in the first half.

For the game, Francis Marion shot 41.8 percent from the floor, was 11-of-19 from three-point range, and canned 15-of-19 free throws.  UNCP managed only 38.6 percent from the field, was 5-of-11 from long distance, and hit 14-of-18 at the free throw stripe.

The Patriots outrebounded the Braves 40-35 and committed only 10 turnovers.
