Bullock’s late free-throws seal another Patriots victory

AUGUSTA, GA – With just one second remaining in the contest and the score tied, Francis Marion University sophomore guard Abigail Bullock was steady from the free-throw line, sinking two shots to give the Patriots a 62-60 victory over Augusta University, Wednesday evening (Jan. 17) in Peach Belt Conference women's basketball action.

The Patriots (11-5, 8-3) move into second place in the PBC, and complete their three-game road trip in five days with a 3-0 mark.  Augusta falls to 3-12 and 1-9.

FMU will return home for its next game against Flagler University on Saturday with the tip-off set for 1:30 p.m. in the Smith University Center.

Junior Shaunice Fulmore led all scorers with 18 points, while Bullock and senior Khai Chandler added 17. Chandler moves into a tie for 16th place on the Patriot career scoring list with Cassandra Bishop at 1,254 points. Fulmore moved into 25th position with 1,105 points.

Senior guards Cynara Pitt and Joshlyn Belcher scored 15 points for the Jaguars, while junior Brianna Middleton added eight points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

Although the game was close with Augusta leading 8-7 at the 6:03 mark of the first quarter, the Patriots went on a 14-1 run to expand the margin to 13 points (21-9). FMU never trailed again in the contest, although the Jaguars knotted the game in the final minute.

FMU would keep a double-digit lead in the second quarter, leading as many as 17 points, and taking the 36-25 advantage into halftime. Chandler recorded 12 points in the first half, while Bullock and Fulmore added eight points.

The Jaguars fought back in the fourth quarter, bringing the game to within one (58-57) with 2:58 remaining in the game. After a layup by Chandler, Pitt drained a three-pointer with 48 ticks left to tie the game at 60-60.  After a miss on FMU's ensuing possession, Augusta held for the final shot, but was called for traveling with six ticks left.

Following a Patriot timeout that advanced the ball to midcourt, Bullock was fouled 24 feet from the bucket during a loose ball situation, putting her on the foul stripe where she would make both free throws.

Francis Marion shot 35.4 percent from the floor, was 5-of-16 on three-pointers, and hit 11-of-19 free throws. The Jaguars shot 34 percent, including 7-21 from behind the three-point arc, and made 17-of-21 free-throws.

FMU sophomore center Tatyana McClaney added six points and a career-high equaling 10 rebounds.
