First-Half Surge carries Patriots past Lakers 74-66

FLORENCE, SC – Francis Marion University connected on 18-of-31 first-half field goal attempts en route to 48 points and that explosion helped carry the Patriots to their fifth straight victory, a 74-66 win over Clayton State University, Saturday afternoon (Jan. 6) in Peach Belt Conference women's basketball action.

Francis Marion improves to 8-3 overall and 5-1 in the conference. The Patriots are tied for second place in the PBC standings, one-half game behind Lander University, FMU's next opponent on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. in the Smith University Center.

Sophomore guard Abigail Bullock led FMU with 20 points – her second consecutive 20-point outing – while handing out four assists.  Senior Khai Chandler scored 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds, while junior forward Shaunice Fulmore added 14 points.  Senior center Kristin Tines chipped in six points on 3-of-3 shooting, while hauling down a game-high 13 rebounds.

Chandler now has 1,193 career points, just five points shy of Kim Slawson (1982-96) and 19th place on the Patriot career scoring list.

Senior forward Abreyln Rackley led four Clayton State (6-6, 3-3) players in double figures with 14 points.  The FMU win snapped a 13-game losing skid to the Lakers that dated back to 2009.

Fulmore connected on a layup off a feed from Bullock just five seconds into the game and the Patriots never trailed.  By virtue of an 11-2 run, the margin quickly grew to 16-6 before the first quarter ended with FMU holding a 24-11 advantage. Fulmore scored eight of her points on 4-of-5 shooting in the opening 10 minutes.

A jumper by Bullock to open the second period extended the margin to 15 points, but Clayton State rallied to trim the lead to 30-21 with seven minutes left before halftime. A free throw by senior guard Keanua Williams started an 18-3 Francis Marion run that allowed the Patriots to double-up the Lakers at 48-24 before FMU settled for a 48-30 halftime lead.

FMU was held to only nine points in the third quarter on 2-of-11 shooting as the Lakers closed the gap to 57-47 heading to the fourth quarter.

An 8-3 spurt by Clayton State narrowed the margin to 60-55 with 5:35 remaining after a three-pointer by Rackley.  Bullock answered with a three-pointer on the Patriots' ensuing possession and a fast-break hoop by Chandler extended the lead to 65-55.

After the Lakers cut the deficit under double figures, Chandler nailed a three-pointer with 1:04 on the clock to give FMU a commanding 72-61 advantage.

Williams finished the game with nine points, seven rebounds, four assists, and two blocked shots.

Francis Marion finished the game shooting 44.6 percent from the field and hit 20-of-28 free throw attempts.  The Lakers shot 32.4 percent from the floor, including only 1-of-14 from behind the three-point arc, and connected on 17-of-23 free throws.
