Patriot Women edge Young Harris 52-46

YOUNG HARRIS, GA – Junior forward Shaunice Fulmore scored 15 points and senior center Kristin Tines grabbed a career-high 19 rebounds as Francis Marion University gutted out a 52-46 road win over Young Harris College, Saturday afternoon (Dec. 30) in Peach Belt Conference women's basketball action.

FMU improves to 6-3 overall and 3-1 in the PBC with its third straight win.  The Patriots will play at USC Aiken on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. before returning home to host Clayton State University on Saturday, Jan. 6, at 1:30 p.m.

Fulmore also hauled down eight rebounds and senior guard Khai Chandler added 12 points. Fulmore moved to within 10 points of becoming the 29th Patriot to surpass 1000 career points.

The Patriots played the majority of the game without the services of senior forward Briana Burgins, the team's third-leading scorer and the conference's top rebounder, who left in the game in the opening minutes with an injury.

Guard Eryn Cochran led Young Harris (4-8, 1-4) with 15 points and seven rebounds.

A 9-0 run by Francis Marion that began in the first quarter and ended in the second produced a 20-11 Patriot advantage.  Young Harris drew to within 27-22 at halftime despite the Mountain Lions being held to one field goal in the second period.

Young Harris opened the third quarter with nine consecutive points to take a 31-27 lead.  However, FMU rallied to lead 38-37 at the end of the period.

Four points by Cochran allowed the Mountain Lions to take a 41-40 lead with 7:15 left in the game.  At the other end, Chandler put FMU ahead for good with a three-pointer and followed that with a jumper and Fulmore added a bucket to put the Patriots on top 47-41.

Young Harris closed the gap to 47-46, but FMU senior Keanua Williams scored on a jump shot with 1:15 remaining and Fulmore drained a pair of free throws to seal the win.

Francis Marion shot 27.9 percent from the floor and was 16-of-26 at the foul line.  The Patriots held the Mountain Lions to only 18.3 percent shooting (13-of-71).
