Burgins sparks Patriots past GSW 73-57

FLORENCE, SC – Senior forward Briana Burgins tallied 21 points, nine rebounds, six assists, and six steals to help propel Francis Marion University past Georgia Southwestern State University 73-57, Sunday (Dec. 17) afternoon in Peach Belt Conference women's basketball action.

The Patriots, who came into the game off a 14-day break for exams, improve to 4-3 overall and even their conference mark at 1-1.  GSW drops to 4-2 and 1-1.

FMU will play host to Columbus State University on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. in the squad's final contest before Christmas.  Tuesday's game features a special 5-for-5 promotion with a family up to five members getting in for only $5.

With her game-high point total, Burgins now stands only 17 points shy of becoming the 28th Patriot to reach 1,000 career points.  During the contest, she also passed Leslie Morgan (1989-92) to move into 15th position on the program's career rebounding list with 704.

Senior Khai Chandler, the PBC's leading scoring this season, added 13 points, while both junior Shaunice Fulmore and sophomore guard Abigail Bullock each scored 10 apiece.  Senior center Kristin Tines scored only four points, but pulled down a career-high 15 rebounds.

A pair of reserves came off the Hurricane bench to pace Georgia Southwestern: guard Tamecia Blue scored 14 points and junior Tyisha Moore registered 12 points and 14 rebounds.  Sophomore Mariya Trimble also posted a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds for GSW, while senior Shanya Jones scored 13 points..

The first quarter was tightly contested, but Francis Marion scored the period's final four points – lay ins by freshman Briana White and Fulmore – to take a 17-13 advantage.  FMU would never trail again.  An 11-3 spurt to open the second quarter extended the Patriot lead to 28-16.  Francis Marion would lead by 14 points, 40-26, at halftime.

Six straight points by Burgins to open the third period pushed the margin to 20 at 46-26.  FMU led 55-40 heading into the fourth period and the margin never dipped below double figures.

Francis Marion connected on 40 percent of its field goal attempts and was 8-of-14 at the foul line.  GSW shot 31.7 percent from the floor, was only 1-of-8 from beyond the three-point arc, and hit 16-of-23 shots at the charity stripe.

The Patriots forced 30 Hurricane turnovers and led 24-12 in fast-break points, while also outrebounding GSW 51-44.
