Patriots’ late run falls short in loss to Chowan

MURFREESBORO, NC – Mariah Coker of Chowan University led all scorers with 28 points to pace the Hawks to an 80-75 victory over Francis Marion University, Tuesday evening (Nov. 28) in non-conference women's collegiate basketball action.

FMU falls to 3-2 on the young campaign, while Chowan moves to 7-1. The Patriots were ranked fifth in the latest D2SIDA Southeast Region poll and the Hawks were 10th in the Atlantic Region.

The Patriots will play an away contest against the University of North Georgia on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. to open up Peach Belt Conference play. Francis Marion will play its next home game on Dec. 17 against Georgia Southwestern with the tip-off set for 1:30 p.m.

Senior guard Khai Chandler led the Patriots with 25 points on 10-of-19 shooting, while junior Shaunice Fulmore tallied 18 points. Senior forward Briana Burgins scored eight points and brought down a game-high 12 rebounds, but had her string of consecutive double-doubles snapped at six. Senior guard Keanua Williams shot 6-of-12 from the field and totaled a career-high equaling 15 points.

Following Coker was Dhyamond Crenshaw with 16 points and Chantel Roberts tallying 12, while Roberts and Joanne Williams recorded nine rebounds apiece.

After an early 2-2 tie, the Hawks would take a six-point lead going into the second quarter at 18-12 as FMU hit only four of its first 16 shots. The Hawks also registered 10 fast-break points in the opening period.

Fulmore would knot the game at 24-24 with a three-pointer at the 4:23 mark of the second quarter, and after an offensive rebound, a put-back by senior Kristin Tines gave the Patriots a 26-24 advantage with 4:01 remaining until halftime. The Hawks would go on a 13-6 spurt in the final 3:17 to give them a five-point lead heading into the intermission (37-32).

Francis Marion would make the game close in the fourth quarter by closing the gap to a 57-56 score in favor of Chowan after a Chandler layup, and following another Chandler lay-in the score was knotted at 64-64 with 5:27 left.  However, the Hawks responded with a 12-4 run and held off FMU in the final minutes.

The Patriots shot 42.0 percent from the field compared to Chowan's 41.7 percent. FMU was 12-of-17 from the free-throw strip, while CU was 11-of-21. Francis Marion outrebounded the Hawks 46-44.
