Flowers blossoms on Senior Night in 71-61 Patriot upset

FLORENCE, SC – Senior point guard TeTe Flowers scored 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting and handed out four assists to help guide Francis Marion University to a 71-61 upset of division-leading Lander University, Wednesday evening (Feb. 15) in Peach Belt Conference women's basketball action.

Francis Marion notches its sixth straight win, and eighth in its last nine games, to move to 15-11 overall.  FMU moves into a tie for second place in the PBC's East Division standings with a 10-7 mark.  Lander, which is ranked sixth in the initial NCAA Division II Southeast Region poll released on Wednesday afternoon, falls to 19-6 and 12-4.

Francis Marion will play at Armstrong State University on Saturday at 4 p.m. in Savannah, Ga.  The Patriots will conclude their regular-season schedule on Feb. 22 at UNC Pembroke.  If FMU secures the second position in the division it would host a quarterfinal game in the PBC Tournament on Feb. 25.

Flowers was honored prior to tip-off in Senior Night festivities and then played 39 minutes.  FMU sophomore forward Shaunice Fulmore scored 19 points and grabbed six rebounds, while junior forward Briana Burgins tallied 14 points and seven rebounds.

FMU junior guard Khai Chandler added 11 points and six rebounds, while junior 5-10 center Kristin Tines grabbed a season-high 13 rebounds and chipped in a key fourth-quarter basket.

Junior guard Mylea McKenith led Lander with 22 points and six rebounds.

Francis Marion held a 17-13 advantage at the end of the first quarter, but the Bearcats rallied to knot the score, 35-35, at halftime.

The Patriots scored the opening seven points of the third quarter to take a 42-35 lead.  Although twice Lander pulled to within two points, FMU maintained a 52-47 margin at the end of the period.

A lay-in by McKenith to open the fourth-quarter scoring brought Lander to with 52-49.  However, Francis Marion responded with a 7-1 spurt to take a 59-50 lead with 6:51 left.  A three-pointer by Ty'hesha Reynolds with 2:41 remaining trimmed the margin to 65-61, but FMU scored the game's final six points, including Tines' driving layup with 1:12 on the clock and two free throws by Flowers with 30 ticks left.

Francis Marion shot 47.5 percent from the field and hit 12-of-19 free throws, while the Patriots held Lander to 38.7 percent shooting, including 4-of-18 from behind the three-point arc.  The Bearcats were 9-of-14 at the foul line.  FMU also held a 44-32 rebounding edge.
