GREENWOOD, SC – Lander University guard Mylea McKenith scored the game's opening eight points and the Bearcats never trailed en route to an 85-47 win over Francis Marion University, Saturday afternoon (Jan. 28) in Peach Belt Conference women's basketball action.
Francis Marion (9-11, 4-7) will play host to East Division-leading UNC Pembroke on Monday night at 5:30 p.m. on McDonald's Night at the Smith University Center.
Breshay Johnson paced Lander (13-5, 7-3) with 22 points and nine rebounds, while McKenith finished with 20 points.
Francis Marion outrebounded the Bearcats 42-38, but the Patriot cause was hampered by 27 turnovers that were converted into 24 points.
FMU shot 30.5 percent from the floor, was 2-of-5 from behind the three-point arc, and hit 9-of-15 free throws. Lander connected on 44.6 percent of its shots, including 5-of-13 from long range, and was 22-of-34 at the charity stripe.
Helped by McKenith's fast start, Lander led 15-6 at the end of the first quarter. The Bearcats finished the second period with an 8-0 spurt to lead 35-17 at halftime.
