Robinson layup lifts Patriots past Pacers

FMU guard Briana Robinson

AIKEN, SC (Dec. 16, 2013) – Junior guard Briana Robinson hit the game-winning layup with three seconds to play to give Francis Marion a 71-69 victory over USC Aiken Monday night in Peach Belt Conference women's basketball action.

The Patriots improve to 5-2 on the season and 1-1 in PBC play. FMU will return to the court Wednesday afternoon as they travel to Spartanburg, S.C., to take on Converse College. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.

Senior guard Dee Gray led all scorers with 18 points and added a game-high eight rebounds. Robinson finished with 11 points and a game-high six assists, while senior forward Kim Roach chipped in 12 points and four rebounds off the bench.

Porsha Martin led USC Aiken (2-8, 0-2 PBC) with 17 points and seven rebounds, while Courtney Mealing and Kate Duff added 12 points apiece.

After holding a narrow one point lead at halftime, FMU reeled off a 10-0 run to take a game-high 13 point lead with 11:49 to play in the second half. However the Pacers would claw their way back into the game, and take a three point lead at 67-64 with 2:08 to play in the game.

Gray would bring the Patriots back within a point of the lead with a layup, before Mackenzie Reese answered with a layup of her own to push the Pacer lead back to three. Sophomore Camille Dash would then hit a huge three-pointer to tie the game for the seventh time with 51 seconds to play.

Reese would attempt to put Aiken back ahead, but her jumper rimmed out and Robinson corralled the tough rebound. The Patriots would hold for the last shot, and Robinson would drive into the lane along the baseline and hit the tough running layup with three seconds on the clock to seal the win for FMU.

The Patriots were a perfect 13-13 from the free throw line, which tied a single game record for free throw percentage originally set in 1992 versus Wofford. It was also the Patriots' first victory at Aiken in four seasons.
