Luff sets record in Patriot split with Falcons

FLORENCE, SC – Francis Marion University junior right-hander Taylor Luff pitched a one-hit shutout and in the process set a new school record as the Patriots downed Pfeiffer University 1-0 in game one of Tuesday's (April 2) non-conference softball doubleheader.  Pfeiffer edged FMU 5-4 in the second contest as the potential tying run for the Patriots was picked off third base for the game's final out.

Francis Marion, now 23-21, closes out its regular season with a trio of Peach Belt Conference road doubleheaders, beginning this weekend at fourth-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State University on Saturday and at Flagler College on Sunday.

In Tuesday's opener, Luff (13-11) allowed only a bloop single to left field by the game's first batter, Falcon second baseman Hannah Jackson.  The only other Pfeiffer base runner came in the sixth inning when Jackson reached on a fielding error.

Luff struck out 12 batters, while issuing no bases-on-balls.  She ran her season strikeout total to 222, breaking the Patriot single-season mark of 218 set by southpaw Michaela Wolf in 2008.  The Bonneau, S.C., native ranks third in NCAA Division II this season in total strikeouts.

The Patriots scored the game's only run in the bottom of the first. Luff led off with an infield single, was sacrificed to second by Kristie Hanewinckel, and scored on an RBI single to center by senior catcher Olivia Ferguson.  Hanewinckel leads NCAA Division II with 23 sacrifice hits.

Ferguson and senior third baseman Tristan Faile were both honored between games of the twinbill as part of the Senior Day activities.

Both Luff and Ferguson had two hits apiece to account for four of the Patriots' five hits.

Pfeiffer righty Lindsey Russell (4-9) took the loss despite allowing only the one run.  She fanned five and walked five.

In the second contest, FMU entered the bottom of the seventh inning trailing 5-3.  The Patriots trimmed the margin to 5-4 with the aid of a walk, a base hit, and an outfield fielding error.  Junior Danielle Payne followed with an infield single to put runners on first and third with two outs.

However, Pfeiffer catcher Julianna Bullington picked FMU's Megan Smith off third base for the game's final out.

Pfeiffer (13-21) scored three times in the third and twice in the sixth to build a 5-2 advantage.  The Patriot plated single runs in each of their last three frames, but came up one run short.

Payne and Luff both registered two hits, while first baseman Carly Madigan had a hit and an RBI.  Ferguson drove in one run in game two with a bases-loaded walk. Earlier in that at bat, she just missed a grand slam homer as her liner cleared the fence but a foot foul.

Payne (5-9) absorbed the game-two defeat as she surrendered the five runs (four earned) on nine hits in 6.1 innings of work.  She struck out three and walked two.

Pfeiffer right-hander Sam Jarmusch (4-7) earned the win as she held FMU to three runs (two earned) on three hits in five innings.  Despite allowing six base runners in her short two-inning stint, Shelby Brown garnered her third save of the 2013 season.

Bullington was 2-for-4 with an RBI, while third baseman Celia Dew was 2-for-4 with a run scored.
