Ferguson’s extra-inning double lifts FMU to sweep

FLORENCE, SC – Senior catcher Olivia Ferguson lofted a run-scoring double to left centerfield, plating freshman outfielder Kelsi Thuer with the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning, to give the Patriots a 5-4 win over Young Harris College and a sweep of their Peach Belt Conference softball doubleheader on Monday evening (March 25).

Junior right-handers Taylor Luff and Danielle Payne combined on a six-hit shutout in the opener as the Patriots prevailed 3-0.

Francis Marion (22-16, 7-7) will play a non-conference doubleheader at Limestone College on Tuesday at 2 p.m.  (PLEASE NOTE the twinbill was originally scheduled for Wednesday, but moved up a day due to a scheduling conflict).

In the second game, Young Harris (22-16, 4-6) forced extra innings with a single run in the top of the seventh.  In the last of the eighth, Thuer started the game-winning rally with a lead-off walk.  After the next two batters were retired by Mountain Lion righty reliever Karli Timms (1-2), FMU senior third baseman Tristan Faile also walked, moving Thuer into scoring position on second.  Ferguson then drove a 2-1 pitch into the left centerfield gap that allowed Thuer to easily cross home plate.

Ferguson registered her second three-hit game of the 2013 season with a 3-for-5 contest that included three runs driven in.  Luff was 2-for-5 with a pair of runs scored.

Payne (5-6) recorded the complete game win as she scattered nine hits and allowed the four runs, only two of which were earned.  She fanned a season-high 10 batters, while issuing just one base-on-balls.

Second baseman Callie Holloway led Young Harris with three hits and a runs scored, while left fielder Sydnee Weaver and shortstop Stacia Williams each had two hits.

In the afternoon's opener, Luff (12-9) allowed six hits, while striking out 10 in 6.2 innings.  Payne entered the game to record the final out and strand two runners on base to earn her first save.

Junior shortstop Lindsey Brown was 2-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI to lead Francis Marion in game one.

Junior second, baseman Kristie Hanewinckel stroked a two-out, two-run single up the middle in the bottom of the second to put FMU on the board at 2-0.  Brown plated an insurance run in the sixth with a two-out double to left center.

Young Harris southpaw Darby Stanford (11-5) took the game-one loss.  She surrendered the three runs on five hits in 5.2 innings, while striking out five.

Weaver paced the Mountain Lions in game one with a 2-for-4 effort at the plate.
