Payne and Faile carry FMU to softball wins

FLORENCE, SC – Francis Marion University completed a sweep of its four games in the annual Patriot Invitational Tournament, by beating Barton College 5-1 and Mount Olive College 7-2 on Sunday (Feb. 3) at the new FMU Softball Stadium.

Francis Marion (4-0) will play a twinbill at Newberry College on Wednesday at 1 p.m.,  before returning home to entertain the same Mount Olive squad again on Saturday at 1 p.m.

In the victory over Barton (0-3), FMU scored all its runs in the bottom of third inning.  The Patriots were aided by three Bulldog errors, two wild pitches, and a passed ball.

Junior center fielder Olivia Zielinski scored the first run when the Bulldog catcher dropped a throw at the plate on a force play.  Junior Taylor Luff scored the second run on a wild pitch and freshman outfielder Christina Smoley scooted home on a passed ball.  Senior catcher Olivia Ferguson plated the fourth run with an RBI single through the left side, and she accounted for the final Patriot run when she crossed the plate on a two-out throwing error.

Six different Patriots registered base hits to back the four-hit pitching of junior right-hander Danielle Payne (1-0), who was making her first start as a Patriot.  She retired the first 11 Barton batters in order and carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning.  She finished with three strikeouts.

Against previously unbeaten Mount Olive (3-1), Luff (2-0) pitched a complete game to earn her second win of the weekend.  She allowed only five hits, struck out 10, and walked only one.

Senior third baseman Tristan Faile drilled a three-run homer over the left field wall in a four-run FMU third frame.  The Lancaster native becomes the first Patriot to homer in the new ballpark.

Sophomore first baseman Carly Madigan laced a two-run single in the fifth frame as the Patriots built a 7-0 advantage.  Madigan finished the game 3-for-3 and had four hits on the day.

FMU junior second baseman Kristie Hanewinckel, Ferguson, and Faile all had two hits in the nightcap.

Mount Olive scored its two runs on a two-homer to center by Katie Moore.
