FLORENCE, SC – The Francis Marion University women remained unbeaten with a 9-0 blanking of Lander University, Saturday afternoon (Feb. 25) in Peach Belt Conference tennis action, while the 14th-ranked FMU men lost a heartbreaking 5-4 decision to 11th-ranked Lander.
In the women's match, FMU lost only one set while improving to 4-0.
In the men's match, Francis Marion (2-1) took a 2-1 advantage after doubles play and led 4-3 with two singles matches left to be concluded. Lander (8-0) knotted the match at 4-4 with only the No.5 singles yet to be decided.
FMU freshman Luke Bateup won the first set easily 6-0, but Lander's Samuel Poutignat rallied to win the second set 6-2. Bateup pulled out to a 4-3 lead in the third and final set, but Poutignat won the next three games and the deciding match point.
Among the Patriot points was junior Alex Caspari upsetting 15th-ranked Paul-Henri Arrigoni in straight sets at No.1 singles.
Both Francis Marion squads will play PBC matches at USC Aiken on Sunday (Feb. 26) at noon.
