FMU Men have soccer steak snapped with 2-0 loss
FLORENCE, SC - Sophomore midfielder Phil Jackson converted a penalty kick in the 51st minute and then assisted on a second goal 18 minutes later to carry the University of Montevallo to a 2-0 win over Francis Marion University, Saturday afternoon (Oct. 3) in Peach Belt Conference men's soccer action.
The loss snapped a nine-match unbeaten streak for Francis Marion (5-3-2, 1-1-1) in conference play and an eight-match unbeaten streak at home for the Patriots. Montevallo, in its first year in the PBC, captured its first conference win and now stands 5-4-1 overall and 1-2-0 in the Peach Belt.
The scoreless first half featured only six combined shots. Montevallo was awarded the penalty kick at the 50:14 mark following an FMU foul in the box. Jackson took advantage of the opportunity and tallied his fourth goal of 2009.
Junior Alex Ghoja used an assist from Jackson to score on a 12-yard shot at 68:12.
Falcon goalkeeper Robert Mueller recorded two saves en route to his third shutout of the season. FMU junior goalkeeper Clark Richeson also made two stops.
Montevallo outshot the Patriots 7-4, although Francis Marion led in corner kicks 5-1.
Francis Marion will play host to Newberry College on Friday at 4 p.m., while Montevallo plays at Clayton State University on Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m.
