#18 FMU Men fall at Anderson 2-0
ANDERSON, S.C. -- In a battle of unbeatens on the young season,
two second-half goals lifted Anderson University past 18th-ranked
Francis Marion University 2-0, Tuesday night at the AU Soccer
Field.
The loss snapped a 14-match regular-season unbeaten streak for the
Patriots, now 2-1-0 on the 2009 campaign.
The two teams played evenly early in the match, but Anderson (3-0) broke through to get on the scoreboard with two goals in a seven-minute span late in the second frame. Sophomore midfielder Lasse Sohrweide blasted a shot past FMU keeper Clark Richeson at the 74:51 mark of the contest.
Earlier in the match, Richeson made diving stops to both his left and right, recording four saves in the first half.
Senior Paulo Passini's header off a free kick from Zach Denson
found the back of the net less than seven minutes after Sohrweide's
score to up the margin to 2-0.
Anderson threatened early in the match, as sophomore Mark Smith
raced down the left side of the pitch and lifted a cross into the
box at the 5:25 mark, but AU was unable to get off a shot.
Sohrweide followed less than a minute later with another feed from
the same area but again the Trojans were unable to capitalize.
Moments later, Richeson knocked down Passini's first attempt of the night, and the balled rolled loose but no Trojan was close enough to take advantage.
Sophomore forward Emerson Peredo recorded FMU's only shot-on-goal in the 21st minute, but it was stopped by Anderson goalkeeper Benjamin Pepion.
AU continued to apply pressure and Sohrweide's close attempt in
the 27th minute of action narrowly missed, just grazing the
crossbar and the teams went to intermission with neither squad able
to find the net.
AU recorded 11 corner kicks on the night, while the Patriots
collected two and the Trojans outshot Francis Marion 19-6.
Francis Marion will play at Pfeiffer University on Sunday
afternoon at 2 p.m.
