Patriots beat #23 LMU 2-1 on the road

HARROGATE, TN - Senior Kyle Clinton's tie-breaking goal in the 58th minute gave Francis Marion University a 2-1 win over 23rd-ranked Lincoln Memorial University, Saturday afternoon (Oct. 24) in men's college soccer action.

Francis Marion improves to 10-3-3 in the key Southeast Region match-up, while the Railsplitters drop to 9-3-1.

The Railsplitters' demise began in the 40th minute of the match when FMU junior Ivan Juric scored off of a corner kick to put the Patriots on top 1-0.  The goal came at the 39:49 mark. LMU needed less than three minutes to score the equalizer when junior Jimmy Vandenhurk used teammate Fernando Silveira's cross to place a header past Francis Marion goalkeeper Clark Richeson.

After going into the half tied at 1-1, both teams battled each other, trading shots and possessing the ball until  Clinton was able to strike paydirt for the Patriots with help from two quick passes by Juan Rivas and Adrian Sikorski.

Despite out shooting Francis Marion University 9-2 in the second half, the Patriots denied the Railsplitters the equalizer.  Richeson finished with four saves.

LMU was ranked third in the most recent regional poll, while the Patriots were number eight.

Francis Marion will host Catawba College on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
