FMU Soccer falls in OT at Montevallo

MONTEVALLO, AL - Arran McCarthy scored 5:46 into the first overtime session to give fourth-seeded University of Montevallo a 2-1 victory over fifth-seeded Francis Marion University, Tuesday evening (Nov. 3) in a quarterfinal match of the 2009 Peach Belt Conference Men's Soccer Tournament.

Montevallo (10-6-1) defeats the Patriots for the second time this season and advances to the PBC semifinals on Friday in Evans, Ga. Francis Marion (11-5-3) must wait to see if the Patriots receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Division II National Tournament.

After a scoreless first half, the Falcons took a 1-0 lead in the 49th minute when Alex Ghoja scored on a bending shot from the right side. McCarthy and Matt Maughn assisted on the score.

Francis Marion evened the score with 10:41 left in regulation when junior Ivan Juric took a pass from Cameron Mabee and scored on a shot from left side that found the far corner of the net.

McCarthy's overtime winner, the only shot by either side in the extra time, was assisted by Nathaniel Foster.

Francis Marion junior goalkeeper Clark Richeson, who led the PBC in goals against average, save percentage, and saves per game, made five saves on Tuesday as the Falcons outshot Francis Marion 17-10.
