FMU men ranked 22nd ; Pair earns PBC honors
The Francis Marion University men’s soccer team is ranked 22nd in the 2009 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas preseason Top 25 poll released recently. A pair of Patriot players also earned Peach Belt Conference Preseason All-Conference recognition.

Francis Marion University men’s soccer coach Kevin Varnado has announced the signing of Gentry Johnson of Wilmington, N.C., and Ryan Lucas of Bedford, Texas, to national letters of intent to attend FMU and play for the Patriots this fall.

Patriot Soccer Camps set for this summer
The Francis Marion University men’s soccer program will hold two Patriot Soccer Academy camps this summer: a Day Camp for boys and girls, ages 6-13, will be held June 15-19 at the ESAB Soccer Complex and a Residential Camp for boys ages 14 to 18 will be held at FMU, July 9-12.

#5 Pioneers end Francis Marion's run in NCAA soccer tournament 3-1
Telmo Dantes and Bruno Conceicao scored first-half goals in a span of 1:59 and fifth-ranked Tusculum College held off a furious rally by 21st-ranked Francis Marion University to claim a 3-1 win, Friday night (Nov. 14) in the second round of the NCAA Division II National Men’s Soccer Tournament. The loss snaps a 15-match unbeaten streak for Francis Marion, the second-longest streak in team history, and ends the Patriots’ season at 14-5-3.

Six Francis Marion University men’s soccer players have been named to the Peach Belt Conference 2008 All-Conference Team, while second-year head coach Kevin Varnado was tabbed as the PBC’s Coach of the Year. Senior defender Willie Hunt and junior midfielder Kyle Clinton were named to the first-team All-PBC squad, while sophomore forward Juan Rivas, sophomore midfielder Ivan Juric, sophomore goalkeeper Clark Richeson, and freshman midfielder/forward Adrian Sikorski all gained second-team recognition.

Francis Marion stuns Carson-Newman 4-3 with miraculous rally
Junior midfielder Kyle Clinton scored an unassisted goal in the second overtime period to give Francis Marion University a miraculous come-from-behind 4-3 victory over Carson-Newman College, Wednesday night (Nov. 12) in an opening-round match of the NCAA Division II National Men’s Soccer Tournament. FMU trailed 3-0 with 30 minutes remaining and rallied to force overtime when junior midfielder Alden Brooks scored an unassisted goal with 22 seconds left in regulation.

Patriot Men enter D2 soccer poll at No. 21
As a result of a 14-match unbeaten streak and sweeping both the Peach Belt Conference regular-season and tournament titles, the Francis Marion University men’s soccer team entered the national rankings this week at the No. 21 position, according to the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas Top 25 poll released Tuesday (Nov. 11).

The Francis Marion University men’s soccer team learned Monday night (Nov. 10) that it earned an invitation to the NCAA Division II national tournament. The Patriots will participate in the Southeast Regional, and will play a first-round match at Carson-Newman College on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. on the Eagles’ McCown Field in Jefferson City, Tenn.

The Peach Belt Conference men’s soccer match between Francis Marion University and Clayton State University scheduled for Saturday afternoon (Sept. 20) has been moved from the FMU campus to the Coker College Soccer Field in Hartsville. The match will kick-off at 4 p.m. The women’s match between FMU and Charlotte (3-3-1) set for Sunday at 2 p.m. on the FMU Soccer Field, is still set to go on as scheduled.
